
Stanley of the Seventh Cavalry escorted Thomas Rosser in his second survey.

They followed the old Sully Trail as far as Sentinel Butte and then passed due west. Major Whistler escorted Thomas Rosser through the western portion of North Dakota. The first was known as the Whistler Expedition of 1871. The railway surveys brought two expeditions through the county. In 1864 General Sully in his campaign against the Sioux Indians passed through what is now Golden Valley County from east to west at approximately its center near the present village of Sentinel Butte.
